One good plant for a ground cover is the Mahonia

Creeping mahonia is not creepy as it sounds, maybe it's just the plant's natural habit. They grow as a sub-shrub which has yellow flowers that appear during spring, along with blue berries during summer. The berries are edible (though bitter at some point) and can be used making jellies. Also, creeping mahonia is a great groundcover, a very low maintenance plant and highly resistant to rabbits and deer.
